One of the big concerns for people is going from 3 blades to 4 blades takes away from the top end of your boat. More grip and bow lift.
My goal was to get more torque with a 4 blade prop to keep my 21 Glastron on plane at 20mph so we could wakeboardtube easier.
3 blade vs 4 blade propeller. One of the main reasons people seem to choose 4 blade propellers over 3 blade propellers is the benefits afforded by the increased blade area given by the extra blade. This extra blade area provides increased water displacement capability greater lift and better grip than the 3 blade propeller. The short answer is the 4 blade propeller has more surface area and bite which allows a boat to get up on a plane and maintain it easier at a lower RPM.
However the 3 blade prop has less surface area which offers less drag and more top speed than the 4 blade prop. The difference between a 3-blade prop vs a 4-blade prop is that the 3-blade smaller blade ratio is faster with a higher top speed and the 4-blade higher blade ratio has a better hole-shot acceleration and better stern lift as well as better handling and fuel economy because it will keep you on plane at. 3-Blade or 4-Blade Props.
Three-blade props offer a nice compromise when it comes acceleration efficiency lift and speed. A four-blade propeller on the other hand can boost acceleration efficiency or lift but at the cost of a lower top speed. Jim Hendricks Sport Fishing.
3 Blade vs 4 Blade Propellers Whats the Difference Between 3 and 4 Blade Outboard Props - YouTube. Generally yes a 4- blade will be less efficient than a 3-blade for the simple reason that the leading edge of the prop loses efficiency as it encounters the disturbed water left by the blade in front of it. Typically a 3-bladed prop will have more space between the blades to reduce that effect.
A four blade gives better holeshot much better in cornering and the top end loss is negligible. At least on my 115 4 stroke. Also I can run my motor higher in the water column with a 4 or 5 blade prop which actually gives me more top end as I dont get slippage and cavitation like I do with my 3 blade props.
One of the big concerns for people is going from 3 blades to 4 blades takes away from the top end of your boat. I personally did see a 10mph drop but my loading of stores has increased significantly. My goal was to get more torque with a 4 blade prop to keep my 21 Glastron on plane at 20mph so we could wakeboardtube easier.
In a single-engine aircraft the propeller blade wake beats on the windshield and produces cabin noise. A 2-blade propeller produces two pressure pulses per revolution whereas a 3-blade propeller will produce three smaller pulses per revolution for the same amount of total thrust. Over the past many years boaters have debated the question of 4-blade propellers versus 3-blade propellers.
The uninformed argument is that 4-blades are slow and 3-blades are fast end of discussion. Today new trends in the marine marketplace and high marine fuel prices have brought new concerns to the boating world. Testing 3 Blade vs 4 Blade Propellers Whats the Difference Between 3 and 4 Blade Outboard Props - YouTube.
A 3 blade boat propeller is capable of handling boats which are up to 40 feet in length. Benefits of 4 Blade Boat Propellers. The 4 blade propeller is a good all-round boat propeller.
It offers decent acceleration good handling and a reasonable top speed. A 4 blade propeller is slightly smaller than its 3 blade counterpart so that the same RPM can be achieved. Mar 19 2020.
Three or four blades are just some of the design consideration. Really depends on your performance criteria or what problem your trying to fix. I went from an inexpensive 3 blade stainless to an OE 4 blade stainless then back to a performance 3 blade.
One of the best places to start is with your propeller. Jon tries three different Mercury propellers on an outbo. Looking for more performance from your boat.
Suggest looking at PowerTech props. PTC 3 blade if your a small wave no large rollers E. Lots of blade rake and tip cupping for bow lift.
PTC4 for heavy seas large swells and river tidal rip channels. Pac NW and rough offshore Alaskan water. More grip and bow lift.
Forget about the 4 blades prop. Get a 3 blades prop 10x14 pitch. 2 more inch pitch will lost 400 rpm but more top speed.
4 blades prop is best suited for gladesman 18 due to flatbottom hull and will run shallower than gheenoe classic. Gheenoe classic is best for 3 blades propeller and a high speed boat due to kinda like a vee hull. Uh I would seriously recommend a 3 blade prop.
I run a 2005 2575 RL IO see specs below and two years ago I fooled around with several different props and I posted all the data on this site and the one 4 blade prop I did try was horrible. Three bladed and four bladed versions existed. The larger the diameter the prop the more efficient it is before transonic tip speeds where itll be less efficient if it has the same gear ratio.
A four bladed prop would have a greater blade area to absorb the extra power of the later R-2800 used in the F4U-4 pictured above. When moving from a 3 blade 16 X 215P to a 4 blade prop WE SHOULD HAVE selected the 4 blade 1525 X 22P in the first place as the 75 reduction in diameter had a dramatic effect on WOT RPM. At 500 and up there isnt much room for economical trial-and-error testing when you try new props.
Theoretically a 3-blade propeller should always be more efficient than a 4-blade. However in the past two big issues have prevented the 3-blade from taking the lead in popularity. The first was a lack of manufacturing precision which commonly caused 3-blades to vibrate more than 4-blades.
